Every spinning mill that runs automatic winders needs the right autoconer wax roll. A wax roll that is too tall, too narrow or has the wrong bore will not sit properly in the waxing unit, gives uneven wax pick-up and leads to more yarn breaks in knitting. This guide explains how to choose the correct spinning mill wax roll size for your machine.
How wax roll size is measured
Wax roll sizes are written as OD × ID × Height in millimetres:
- OD (outer diameter) – usually 38 mm or 45 mm.
- ID (inner bore) – the hole that fits on the machine spindle, for example 13 mm or 15.2 mm.
- Height – from 12 mm up to 45 mm. Taller rolls last longer between changes.
The hole type also matters: most machines use a circular bore, while SSM, MVS and Reiter winders often use a square bore.
Autoconer wax roll size chart
| Machine | Common wax roll size (OD × ID × H) | Hole type |
|---|---|---|
| Murata Autoconer | 38 × 13 × 32 mm | Circular |
| Murata 21C model | 38 × 13 × 45 mm | Circular |
| Murata Jet Spinner (MJS) | 38 × 13 × 20 mm | Circular |
| Schlafhorst / Savio | 38 × 15.2 × 45 mm or 38 × 13.5 × 45 mm | Circular / square bottom |
| Cone winders | 38 × 15.2 × 15, 20 or 26 mm | Circular |
| SSM winders | 45 × 12.5 / 14 / 15.4 mm bore, 12–45 mm height | Circular or square |
| MVS winders | 45 × 12.5 × 25 mm | Square |
| Reiter | 45 × 12.5 × 45 mm | Square |

Choosing the right wax grade
Size makes the roll fit; the grade decides how much wax goes onto the yarn. Choose by yarn type and mill temperature:
- WR-MI-10 Green – universal grade for cotton, wool, rayon, acrylic and blends.
- WR-MI-20 Yellow – medium and fine counts in warm mills (around 85°F).
- WR-MI-30 Blue – higher wax pick-up for soft-twist and bleached yarns at low winding tension.
- WR-MI-40 Pink / WR-MI-50 Lemon Yellow – water-soluble grades for yarn that will be dyed or bleached.
- WR-MI-300 White – fine-crystalline grade for cotton/polyester hosiery yarn conditioned at very high temperature.
Signs you are using the wrong wax roll
- The roll wobbles or does not rotate freely in the waxing unit.
- Wax is used up very quickly, or hardly at all.
- Knitters complain about yarn breaks, needle wear or uneven fabric.
- White wax powder (fly) builds up around the winding head.
