Choosing the right candle wax decides how your candles look, burn and smell. In India, most candle makers use paraffin wax because it is affordable, easy to colour and holds shape well. But paraffin comes in different grades. This guide explains which one to buy.
The three main candle waxes
| Wax type | Oil content | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Fully Refined Paraffin Wax (FRPW) | Less than 0.5% | Premium pillar, jar and scented candles |
| Semi Refined Paraffin Wax (SRPW) | 1% to 5% | Regular, religious and decorative candles at lower cost |
| Vegetable wax | – | Eco-friendly premium candles with good fragrance |
Fully refined paraffin wax (FRPW)
FRPW is the purest paraffin grade. It is white, odourless and has a melting point of about 60–65 °C. Because the oil content is very low, candles are harder, glossier and burn cleaner with less smoke. FRPW is the best choice for scented candles, because it does not add any smell of its own.
We supply FRPW from Indian refineries including IOCL (Rhino Wax), CPCL and NRL.
Semi refined paraffin wax (SRPW)
SRPW has more oil, so it is slightly softer and costs less. It is widely used for everyday candles, diya and puja candles, and decorative candles where price matters more than a perfect finish. We offer three oil-content options:
- Grade A – 1% to 1.5% oil
- Grade B – up to 3% oil
- Grade C – up to 5% oil
Lower oil content gives a harder candle with less “sweating” on the surface.
Vegetable wax
Vegetable wax comes from a renewable source and is preferred for premium eco candles. It burns cleaner and holds fragrance well, which suits luxury and gift candles.
Tips for better candles
- For jar candles, choose a softer wax that sticks to the glass. For pillar candles, choose a harder wax that releases from the mould.
- Adding a small amount of microcrystalline wax makes candles less brittle and reduces cracking.
- Always melt wax slowly and add colour and fragrance at the temperature your supplier recommends.
